Q Researchers want to understand why high school students decide they want to go to college. They take a random sample of high school students and ask them how interested they are in going to college (Interest) on a scale of 1 (not at all) to 7 (very much). They also record family’s income in thousands of dollars (Income) and high school grade measured as the GPA on a scale from 0 – 4 (Grade). First the researchers want to see if income can be a factor in students’ decisions to go to college. The researchers use a bivariate regression model (Y ?=a+bX) to answer their question. In the model, which variable would be the outcome/criterion variable/dependent variable (Y)? 2. Which variable would be the predictor/independent variable (X)? 3. What is the constant in the regression equation? 4. What is the coefficient in the regression equation? 5. What does this coefficient mean in terms of the effect of a unit change in income (measured in thousands of dollars) on interest in college?
